PHP Backend Developer Tokio / Remote [English Required]

We’re looking for a PHP-focused backend developer to support ongoing backend development and integrations. E-commerce exposure is welcome, but not required.

You’ve already shipped real-world projects (side projects, freelance, products, or in-house systems) and you’re comfortable taking ownership of backend tasks in production environments.

Your tasks would be:

• Backend development in PHP (8+) for web projects
• Building and maintaining custom features and integrations
• API integrations (internal/external services)
• Implementing data flows (CSV / XML / JSON), imports/exports, feed processing
• Development and maintenance of modules/plugins where applicable
• Improving performance, stability, and maintainability of existing systems
• Supporting operations-related topics when needed (logs, debugging, server-side issues)

Your skills should be:

Must have:

• PHP 8.0+ (solid backend development experience)
• MySQL (schema design, querying, performance basics)
• SSH / Terminal (comfortable working on servers, logs, deployments, debugging)
• First PHP MVC Frameworks experience (Laravel, Symfony, etc.)

Nice to have:

• E-commerce platforms (Shopify / Shopware / WooCommerce / Magento etc.)
• Twig / Smarty / Blade template engines
• JavaScript
• Web caching strategies
• CDNs
• Cloudflare
• Redis
• Elasticsearch / OpenSearch
• Supervisor / Supervisord
• Docker
• Git / GitHub / GitLab
• Website security & server security mindset
• Apache2 / Nginx
• CI/CD or deployment automation experience
• Working with spreadsheets (Excel / Google Sheets)

You should speak the following languages

• English (Business) — required
• German — big plus / not required
• Japanese — not required

That’s what you get from us:

Salary

• Basic level (solid fundamentals across the required skills):
  3,5 – 4 million JPY / year + overtime + bonus
• Experienced level (strong hands-on experience with the required skills):
  4 – 4,5 million JPY / year + overtime + bonus
• Senior level (multiple years of professional experience with the required + nice to have skills):
  4,5 – 5 million JPY / year + overtime + bonus
• Expert level (deep expertise across the required + nice to have skills, able to lead technically):
  5 – 7 million JPY / year + overtime + bonus

Working hours – working days:

Monday to Friday (core hours: 12:00 – 18:00 JST). – Flexible working hours outside core hours – 40 hours/week full time – home office 2 days/week
